Rabi MSP Hike to Give Haryana Farmers Up to Rs 720 Crore Additional Benefit*

Chandigarh, October 5: The Centre’s increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for rabi crops for the 2027-28 marketing season is estimated to provide Haryana farmers with around Rs 515 crore in additional MSP payments at current procurement levels. If mustard procurement in the state reaches the planned level of 13 lakh tonnes, the additional benefit to farmers could rise to approximately Rs 720 crore.

A government spokesperson said mustard and wheat are expected to account for more than 99 per cent of the estimated gain. At an assumed procurement level of eight lakh tonnes, the Rs 413 per quintal increase in mustard MSP could translate into an additional payment of around Rs 330 crore to Haryana farmers.

The MSP of wheat has seen an increase of Rs 25 per quintal, resulting in an estimated additional payment of about Rs 180 crore on procurement of 72 lakh tonnes.

Notably, the Centre has raised the MSP for wheat from Rs 2,585 to Rs 2,610 per quintal, while the MSP for mustard has been increased from Rs 6,200 to Rs 6,613 per quintal.

In addition, barley MSP has risen from Rs 2,150 to Rs 2,286 per quintal, gram from Rs 5,875 to Rs 5,958, masur from Rs 7,000 to Rs 7,390 and safflower from Rs 6,540 to Rs 7,215 per quintal. Mustard and safflower have received the largest percentage increases among the major rabi crops covered in the announcement.

The higher mustard MSP is particularly significant for Haryana’s mustard-producing belt, including Sirsa, Bhiwani, Mahendragarh and Charkhi Dadri. While mustard procurement volumes are considerably lower than wheat, the much larger increase of Rs 413 per quintal means that mustard generates nearly twice the estimated additional gain from wheat under the current procurement assumptions. If procurement reaches 13 lakh tonnes, mustard alone could generate an estimated Rs 537 crore in additional MSP payments, taking the overall gain to around Rs 720 crore.

The increase in MSP also signals a greater policy push towards pulses and oilseeds, in line with Haryana’s crop diversification objectives.

The estimates are based on assumed procurement of 72 lakh tonnes of wheat and eight lakh tonnes of mustard. Haryana procured 74.95 lakh tonnes of wheat in RMS 2025-26, while mustard procurement stood at 7.74 lakh tonnes. The state had planned mustard procurement of around 13 lakh tonnes for 2026-27, which forms the basis for the higher-benefit scenario.
