Chandigarh, September 2 – Haryana Chief Minister Sh. Nayab Singh Saini said providing better, modern and specialised healthcare facilities closer to the people is a priority of the State Government. The government is continuously strengthening healthcare services as well as medical education facilities in medical colleges and hospitals across the State so that people have access to better treatment, particularly in cases of serious illnesses and medical emergencies.

The Chief Minister was chairing a meeting of the State Finance Committee at the Secretariat on Wednesday, where the Phase-II expansion of Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College and Hospital (KCGMC), Karnal, was discussed. Health Minister Smt. Arti Singh Rao was also present at the meeting.

Under Phase-II, the medical facilities and capacity of the hospital will be expanded substantially, enabling people from Karnal and adjoining areas to access better specialised and super-speciality healthcare services. 

At present, KCGMC has an annual admission capacity of 120 MBBS students and 64 postgraduate seats, while the hospital has a bed capacity of approximately 600, with an average bed occupancy of around 80 per cent.

A proposal of Rs. 404.95 crore has been placed for expansion of the hospital complex under Phase-II. The proposed infrastructure will include a Trauma Centre, Burn Unit and Burn Ward, ICU, ICCU, General Medicine, Nephrology, Neuro-Surgery and Psychiatry facilities. Provision will also be made for a helipad and other necessary allied and support facilities.

The proposed expansion envisages the addition of approximately 505 hospital beds, increasing the institution’s total bed capacity from around 600 to 1,100. The enhanced capacity will facilitate better treatment for patients with serious illnesses, accident victims and other complicated cases, while significantly improving the availability of specialised and super-speciality healthcare services in the region.

The Chief Minister was apprised that the MBBS admission capacity of the medical college is also proposed to be increased from 120 to 250 seats. This will significantly augment the institution’s capacity for medical education and training of doctors.

Some construction works under Phase-II have already been initiated. The Haryana Police Housing Corporation is undertaking the construction of additional hostels and residential accommodation at a cost of Rs. 169.58 crore. The expansion work of the hospital complex under Phase-II will also be taken up shortly.

The Phase-II expansion will create the requisite infrastructure not only to meet the institution’s present requirements but also to facilitate future expansion of its academic, clinical and super-speciality services.

The expansion will further strengthen KCGMC as a major tertiary-care medical education and healthcare institution, enhancing its capacity to provide advanced diagnostic, therapeutic, emergency and super-speciality services and cater to the growing healthcare needs of the region.

Principal Secretary to  Chief Minister, Sh. Arun Kumar Gupta, Commissioner and Secretary, Medical Education and Research Department, Sh. C.G. Rajini Kaanthan, Director, Medical Education and Research Department, Sh. Dhirendra Khadgata, and other officers were present during the meeting.
