The Haryana Government has taken a major decision in the interest of sanitation workers by taking an in-principle decision to bring sanitation workers working on municipal rolls under the ambit of the Haryana Contractual Employees (Service Security) Act, 2024. With this decision, the services of sanitation workers will be secured up to the age of 60 years, and they will receive several benefits broadly at par with regular employees under the provisions of the Act.

As per the directions of Chief Minister Sh. Nayab Singh Saini, the government has taken another step in the interest of these employees by taking an in-principle decision to provide a risk allowance of Rs. 2,000 per month. In addition, it has been decided to provide 15 per cent additional amount over and above the amount payable as per eligibility under the Act, 2024.

It is noteworthy that at present, 13,093 sanitation workers working on municipal rolls are employed in urban local bodies across the state. These employees are currently being paid Rs. 20,590 per month, comprising Rs. 19,000 as salary and Rs. 1,590 as allowances.

After being brought under the ambit of the Haryana Contractual Employees (Service Security) Act, 2024, sanitation workers will also be entitled to various benefits, including annual dearness allowance, death-cum-retirement gratuity, maternity leave, and ex-gratia financial assistance and ex-gratia appointment under Haryana Kaushal Rozgar Nigam Limited (HKRNL).

As per this decision, the monthly remuneration of sanitation workers who have been working on municipal rolls for more than 10 years will increase to Rs. 25,560. This will comprise Rs. 21,970 as salary, Rs. 2,000 as risk allowance and Rs. 1,590 as other allowances.

Sanitation workers play an important role in keeping cities clean, and the government is fully committed to their welfare and socio-economic security. The decision to provide job security and additional financial benefits is an important step towards securing their future.
